Mechanical parts will produce different forms of deformation under different external forces. The main forces and deformations are as follows:
Tension and compression
This kind of deformation is caused by a pair of forces with equal size, opposite direction, and the action line coincides with the axis of the member, which is manifested in the extension or shortening of the length of the member. Such as the deformation of the steel cable for lifting heavy objects, the rod of the truss, the piston rod of the hydraulic cylinder, etc., all belong to tensile or compressive deformation. It is common to see members under tension or compression in engineering. For example, when tightening the screw cap, the compressed workpiece has a reaction force on the screw, and the screw bears tension; The screw rod of the jack bears compression when lifting heavy objects. The former is subject to elongation deformation, while the latter is subject to shortening deformation. When the straight rod is subjected to the action of external forces of equal magnitude and opposite directions along the axis, the deformation of elongation or shortening is called axial tension or compression of the straight rod. This chapter only discusses the axial tension and compression of straight bars. If the shape and stress condition of the bar under axial tension or compression are simplified, it can be simplified to the stress diagram shown in Figure 3-1. In the figure, solid lines are used to represent the shape before stress, and dotted lines are used to represent the shape after deformation.
